Collecting Acapella Lullabies... In 2016 two graduating students from the Music Academy at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia, travelled to remote villages around the country to record acapella lullabies some, more than 300 years old. These songs were passed on from generation to generation and no written record of them, exists. The survived only in the musical memory of village women who remain the original writers of these precious archaic songs. These were uneducated young mothers who came up with verses that helped put their babies to sleep. Little did they know that they were creating as well as preserving a very precious cultural record. The musical collaborators from all over the world, who took on the challenge to conquer the originality of the 7/8 rhythm of Macedonian tempo to arrange the songs, and even dared to sing a few stanzas in Macedonian, are the true heroes of the project. We are grateful for their contribution which was a pro–bono effort to help us raise funds for the establishing of an endowement fund for college education of young girls in Macedonia, who will eventually, as mothers, be the ones that will make best use of these arrangements.
